You got the interview… now, what to wear?
Once upon a time, almost everyone wore business suits to job interviews. Why? Because you’re never going to offend anyone if you wear a suit and you want to make the right impression!
What you wear to your next job interview might be more important than you think. Whether you like it or not, your appearance is the first thing people notice about you – and first impressions last.
‘What do I wear to the interview?’ It's a question millions of people agonise over on some level while preparing for a job interview.
The following guidelines are commonly accepted as appropriate for interviewing. Every company has a different dress code; how you dress at the job may have very little to do with how you should dress for an interview.
Men's Interview Attire
Women's Interview Attire
But what if the job is in a NON-SUIT wearing office?
Even if you would or could wear jeans on the job, or the work environment is outdoors and you wouldn’t wear a suit, wearing a suit to the interview shows you take the interview seriously. Dressing well is a compliment to the person(s) you are meeting with. If you think the industry in which you're interviewing would frown on a suit, or the interview will involve going to a work site where a suit would be inappropriate, clarify the issue by asking the employer directly and politely beforehand.
If you want to know how to dress for an interview then follow this simple rule: dress for the job you want, not the one you have. Appearance plays a major part in hiring decisions - hiring managers need to be able to visualise you in that position they are trying to fill.
