You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile

A smile can go a long way. Imagine a world without smiles – it would be such a dull and boring place.

The workplace can be fast paced and stressful. A simple smile and a positive ‘can do’ attitude can reduce stress and make the workplace a more pleasant environment for everyone.

During my time at Performance Careers, I have interviewed many students who have not smiled much through their consultation.

I have also interviewed students who greeted me with a big smile and ended their meetings with a big smile.

Which students do you think I remember most?

Our host companies recognise this too. Some of the feedback is that there was no engagement or interest shown by some students. First impressions last and you want to make yours last for the right reason. Non-verbal communication is a great way to show interest and engagement. Examples include:

  • Facial expressions – eg, smiling
  • Body contact – eg, firm handshake
  • Head movements – eg, nodding
  • Posture – eg, sitting up straight

Did you know that non-verbal communication is more important than verbal communication?

Research has shown the following:

Your never fully dressed

Surprised? Thought so.

Non-verbal communication is something within your control that you can easily work on. Be self-aware and think to yourself, “What is my body language saying? Do I look bored? Do I look happy? Do I look miserable? Do I look engaged?”

Remember it’s not just about smiling and appearing happy all the time because you don’t want to come across as fake in interviews or meetings. Instead, it’s about showing your positivity, enthusiasm and eagerness about what you do and that you actually want to be there.

Not only will smiling brighten up people’s days and make you feel good, but it will also portray a certain impression such as make you more likeable, help you engage better at work, and be more likely to score that second interview. So complete your outfit, and wear a smile!
