How To Go The Extra Mile And Succeed At Work

Completing an internship in your chosen profession is a step in the right direction to starting your career.

However, in order to get noticed, doing the bare minimum is not enough.

The people who get the furthest in their careers are those who think outside the box and go the extra mile to ensure they do everything they can to make the most out of every opportunity, as those who do more, learn more. Follow these few tips during an internship or job and you should be turning heads in the office!

1. Look out for additional tasks

Always be on the lookout for more work, or additional tasks. Once you have completed the tasks that have been assigned to you, not only ask if there is anything else you can do, see if you can find jobs yourself (within reason).

It may take a couple of weeks to determine if it is appropriate to take it upon yourself to help out with additional tasks, but more often than not, your supervisor will be impressed with your ability to take initiative.

2. Volunteer your strengths

Be aware of what is going on around you day-to-day. There may be things happening around you that you know you are more than capable of helping with, but your supervisor has not yet realised.

For example, you might be a superstar on Photoshop but your manager is only giving you HTML coding to do, or you might have experience using MYOB but you have solely been completing data entry. Let them know what your strengths are and they will be giving you more responsibility in no time.

3. Talk to people

Talk to as many people as possible in the office – even those outside of your department. It will be beneficial for you to learn as much as possible about the business as a whole, and other staff members are the best people to learn from. The more you know, the more you will be able to help, and the more responsibility you will be given.

4. Ask questions

If you don’t know how to do something, or you would like to learn something new, or even if you would just like to sit in on a meeting or observe a co-worker complete a task, just ask! It will show your supervisor and co-workers that you are keen to know and do more, and you are interested and enthusiastic.

5. Be willing

Finally, always be willing to improve. The best way to improve is by asking for feedback. Arrange a weekly meeting with your supervisor to discuss areas you could improve or develop in. This will show them that you are determined to succeed which is an impressive trait.
