Making of a Mentor

Deciding to become a mentor is a big step. You may have concerns about managing your workload alongside your new role, not to mention how to navigate all of this in a COVID world! Things have certainly changed.

As employability experts, Performance Education has spent the better part of 13 years perfecting our program so that mentors from all walks of life can enjoy the process. We aim to support you all the way so that it is straight forward and well managed. Ultimately, happy mentors equal happy graduates.

So you have decided you would like to share your knowledge of accounting or IT with the next generation of industry professionals. “How do you set this up?” We hear you ask. Well, here are our top 5 tips for getting the most out of your internship experience.

  1. CHECK you have the right experience to be a mentor in the field of IT or Accounting. We need people who are degree qualified, CA/CPA registered or have extensive industry experience.
  2. CONTACT Performance Education to ensure your company will qualify as a suitable host.
  3. CREATE a training plan in advance. A clear 12-week plan will ensure everyone knows what to expect, which will put graduates’ mind at ease and also help you manage your workload alongside your new role as a mentor. We have a range of templates on hand to make this easy for you.
  4. PROVIDE constructive criticism throughout the internship so the graduate can improve both their soft and technical skills, which will better prepare them for future employment and will allow you to grow your people management capability.
  5. BE open, honest and friendly. We all remember how intimidating that first job was, so let’s not forget that these graduates are here to learn from you. The more you give, the more comfortable the graduates will feel in their new environment.

Your time is precious, and we understand that. Let our team take away the stress of becoming a mentor and allow you to BE a mentor.
