“Believe in yourself – that’s all you need to do,” said a beaming Arko.

We were inspired when talking to Arko Talukder, a Performance Education SMIPA (Accounting) Professional Year student at who had just finished his final class of Practical Applications. This is where students consolidate their classroom learnings and work integrated learning placement experience to prepare for their next stage of life – working in Australia.

Arko has had tremendous success throughout his Professional Year program at Performance Education, and a lot of it has to do with his positive attitude. As part of the program students experience 12 weeks in a host company in Australia, to apply what they’ve learnt about Australian business culture, communication skills, workplace expectations and more.

Before his work integrated learning placement interview, Arko researched the company thoroughly, prepared about 10 follow up questions and also quizzed the receptionist on company culture while waiting for his interview to start.

On the first day of his placement, Arko was asked to present to a board of managers and lawyers, advising on the best program to use for their company – what pressure! But he blitzed through the presentation and was soon seen as a respected accountant in the company.

His efforts and skills were clearly demonstrated and just 6 weeks into his placement, he was offered a job! Arko advises students, “Be hungry for knowledge and make sure you are prepared”.

When chatting with Arko, we could tell he was still really amazed at what the Professional Year and placement opportunity did for him, and the success he has experienced. We could also feel his excitement for what the future holds, and we are equally excited for him.

On a side note – earlier this year Arko was featured in the Australian Red Cross Blood Service’s newsletter! It’s one of his ways of contributing to the Australian community that he’s a part of.
